Natural eyelashes are not the same as working with strip lashes on a mannequin. Every client has different lash density, growth patterns, eye shapes, sensitivities, and expectations. Learning to work safely and confidently on real people requires hands-on practice under the guidance of an experienced lash technician.

If you're new to the profession, I strongly recommend training with an educator who is actively working behind the lash bed—not someone who simply teaches.

Every educator has a different lash aesthetic, workflow, and philosophy. Learn from someone whose work, professionalism, and client results you admire.

When I began my career, I had no one to teach me this information. I spent thousands of hours researching anatomy, adhesive science, ingredients, lash health, and client retention, then applied what I learned through more than 10,000 lash services as different retention and allergy challenges presented themselves.

Creating Lash Intensive® wasn't easy. It took nearly a decade of researching, writing, testing, documenting, and refining because I had no Plan B. I simply wanted to create the education I wished someone had created for me.

My hope is that Lash Intensive® shortens your learning curve, helps you avoid years of unnecessary trial and error, and gives you the knowledge I spent years searching for.

A curriculum may also be independently accredited by a third-party organization that evaluates the educational content itself.

These accreditations serve different purposes and are not interchangeable.

When researching a lash program, consider asking:

• Is the school accredited?
  • If so, by whom?
• Is the lash curriculum independently accredited?
  • Who reviewed the curriculum?
  • What standards were used during the review?
  • Was the curriculum evaluated for educational quality, organization, scientific accuracy, and instructional design?

One of the greatest freedoms of this profession is that you get to build the career you want.

You're not beholden to trends, social media, or the expectations of others.

You're accountable only to yourself—and to the clients who trust you with their eyes.

Neither path is better. 

They're simply different.

Working for an established salon or studio allows you to gain experience, build confidence, and learn your craft while someone else manages many of the responsibilities of running a business.

The tradeoff is that you're helping build their business.

The clients you serve belong to the salon, not to you.

If you eventually leave, you'll likely be starting over and building a new clientele from the beginning.

If you choose this path, leave with integrity.

Don't solicit or poach clients.

A strong business is built on a strong foundation. Taking someone else's clients may seem like the easier path, but your reputation follows you long after you leave. Integrity is one of the greatest assets you'll ever build.

Opening your own studio is different.

From the very beginning, every client relationship, every referral, and every returning appointment helps build your business. It also comes with the responsibility of marketing, scheduling, finances, and every other aspect of business ownership.

Neither path is right or wrong.

Choose the one that fits your goals, your season of life, and the career you want to build.

There isn't one answer. 

Some technicians build a full clientele in months. Others take several years.

It depends on your location, availability, pricing, marketing, client experience, and—most importantly—how many clients return.

Every client who comes back for a fill becomes part of the foundation you're building.

A new client is exciting.

A returning client builds a business.

Focus less on filling your appointment book as quickly as possible.

Focus more on building a clientele that doesn't want to leave.

Your reputation will always be your best form of marketing.

Choose an educator who specializes in the lash aesthetic you want to learn. 

Ideally, your educator should be a full-time working lash technician with years of experience caring for recurring clients. Real-world experience matters because every appointment presents new opportunities to learn, troubleshoot, and grow.

An educator doesn't need "Certified Lash Instructor" behind their name to become an exceptional mentor.

The mentor who changed my career had been a full-time lash technician for more than 11 years. She had built a loyal clientele through years of experience, yet she didn't have an instructor certification.

She taught me more about performing lash services than beauty school or any certification course I ever attended.

I wouldn't be where I am today without her mentorship.

That's why I believe one-on-one mentoring is irreplaceable.

Start by asking yourself one question. 

What is your objective?

As an aspiring lash technician with little or no experience, your first goal shouldn't be collecting certifications.

Your first goal should be building a strong foundation.

As your career grows, your educational needs will change. Early in your career you'll need to learn safe application, anatomy, lash health, retention, and client communication. Later you may choose education focused on advanced techniques, product systems, business, troubleshooting, or becoming an educator.

Before investing in any program, think about your long-term goals.

• Do you plan to remain in your current state?
• Do you hope to relocate someday?

If so, research your current state licensing requirements and the requirements of the state where you eventually hope to practice. Reciprocity requirements vary from state to state, and it's much easier to plan ahead than discover a licensing obstacle after you've already invested your time and money.

If you plan to build a professional lash career, build it legally from the beginning.

Before enrolling, ask the school or educator:

• How many hours is the program?
• Will I work on live models?
• How many full sets will I complete?
• How many fill appointments will I perform?
• Will I experience two-, three-, and four-week fills?

Those questions will tell you far more about the quality of the education than the word "certified."

Don't rush into advanced certifications before you've built a solid foundation. 

In 2019, I attended an advanced volume certification where about a dozen students had virtually no real-world experience. On paper, they met the prerequisites because they completed previous certification courses. In reality, many were still struggling with the fundamentals of applying lashes safely and confidently on live models. 

The instructor spent much of the class teaching foundational application skills, leaving very little time to cover the advanced volume techniques many of us had invested several thousand dollars to learn. I left this two-day class with no skills on how to create volume fans. 

The right education at the wrong time is still the wrong education.

Absolutely. 

It's much easier to begin your career charging professional rates than it is to spend years trying to increase prices after you've built a clientele expecting bargain prices.

Knowledge becomes part of the service you provide.

• Can you confidently explain the difference between a two-week and a four-week fill?
• Can you explain why daily lash shedding makes six-week retention unrealistic?
• Can you explain why retention changes?
• Can you explain why one adhesive performs differently than another?
• Can you explain why a client suddenly develops a sensitivity?

When I started my career, I couldn't answer those questions.

I knew how to apply clean lash extensions because my mentor taught me well.

Beyond that, I had no understanding of why things happened.

• I didn't understand adhesive science.
• I didn't understand ingredients.
• I didn't understand anatomy.
• I didn't understand retention.
• I didn't understand allergies.
• I had no one to teach me.

That lack of knowledge hurt my confidence.

When a client asked "Why?", I often didn't know the answer.

I had to spend years researching, testing, and learning those answers on my own.

Starting your career with a strong educational foundation doesn't mean you know everything.

It means you begin your career years ahead of where I started.

You can build confidence sooner.

You can educate your clients with confidence.

And you can charge based on the value you provide—not because everyone else charges that amount.
